Owners of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels should have a special interest in locating veterinary neurologists, in view of the severe genetic disorder, Syringomyelia (SM), which is becoming more common among CKCSs. See also the Syringomyelia Breeding Protocol, which all Cavalier breeders should follow in making their breeding decisions. Not all neurologists are as knowledgeable about SM and Chiari-like malformation (CM) as are others. CKCS owners should first ask the neurologists if they are familiar with SM/CM and their treatments (both drugs and surgery), and if they have access to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners. If not, then the Cavalier owners should ask those neurologists to refer them to other neurologists who are more familiar with the disorder and treatments and have MRI scanners available. Neurologists listed below in red have been reported to us (by owners of SM-affected dogs) to be knowledgeable about SM/CM and their treatments, and who have access to MRI scanners.
